02/01/2003 Entry: "Columbia"

This is awful. Another space shuttle is lost. I remember watching the Challenger explode when I was in the 6th grade. I never thought I'd have to watch something like that again.

I've read many times that older generations have criticized Gen Xers because we never had anything really traumatic happen to us. They quote the JFK assasination and ask each other "where were you when you heard?" Well, now we have the Challenger, the Gulf War (which most people seem to regard as a joke), Sept. 11th, and a second war looming over us. Life doesn't seem to be easy, no matter what generation you live through.

For the record, I didn't hear the sonic boom this morning. I sleep like a frigging rock. And, honestly, I'm rather glad I missed it. I couldn't imagine trying to fall asleep tonight (or any night) with that sound echoing in my head.

My sympathies to the Columbia crew, their families, and everyone involved.

It's bizarre b/c i was actually talking to Unkle John this morning online and got offline shortly before 8am....I didn't find out until 9am...but there's a possibility that i could have heard the "sonic boom" noise...but i'm in the flight path of DFW so i could have easily mistaken a noise for an airplane overhead. And THANK YOU for mentioning that we haven't "experienced" anything traumatic like JFK! I too remember the Challenger vividly - in 3rd grade. We had the Gulf War, Waco, Oklahoma City, Columbine, 911, and the scary thought of a new war ahead of us. It's terrifying to think of all of these events...to have images from these times forever implanted in our minds. I sometimes feel as though it's only getting worse - what will happen to the next generation?? I for one feel as though I've seen enough - what a nightmare to think of what could possibly happen next.

This morning at about 8:13am my house shook.
But it wasn't from an earthquake.
If was the shockwave of the space shuttle Columbia's explosion.
It happend almost directly above my house.
They are still finding debris as close as 15 miles from our home.

Someone screwed up..... big time.

I'm saddened by this loss of lives.
They would still be alive today, but they are not. Due to the fact that people cut corners and budgets, just to get it done faster, we have lost 7 brave people.

I pray the Gods came swift for them before their bodies where harmed.
