I've been awake since 2:30. I hate it when I can't sleep. I should be soaking in a bubblebath right now, but instead I'm sitting in front of this damn machine again.

I'm reading random blogs. Snob that I am, whenever I find one that is anime-themed I think "booooring," and close it. Anime (aside from the weird porn shite) has to be the lamest trend ever. The first time I ever saw an anime movie was one evening in '95. I was hanging out with my friend Chuck at his ultra-hip studio apartment in Austin. (It was in a creaky old house. You could see the capital building from one of the huge windows. Rawk.) I remember being so frigging bored. Watching cartoon machines sodomize little bug-eyed Asian girls was not my idea of fun, bizarre as it was. I waited until he went to the bathroom and changed the tape to Blue Velvet. Woo.

And now, many years later, you can't escape from the little bug-eyed Asian girls. Damn the luck. There's a scary amount of 13 and 14 year old girls with domains.

Yes Yes what is wrong with anime is that it is a TREND. There are not enough people who I can say actually appreciate it but just go along with it becuase it's just that a TREND. Not to mention it's to styalized. You see one anime character designe you pretty much seen them all. There are of course very few exeptions such as Yoshitaka Amano. You can say the same thing about Disney though. You pretty much can predict how a character will look like when it smiles and such. Not that anime is a bad thing it's still a form of animation and should be considered art. I do watch anime but I would hardly consider myself Otaku. I thought I was a typical fangirl, but once i got to college (Art Institute of PHNX) I saw so many peple drawing in anime style it just jaded me. I still watch anime but I have become very very very picky to what I do watch.

So someone comes along and says this and this sucks and everyone has to run flock and defend their right of free speech or something. Okay Whenever I look at these kind off posts I wonder. Why do people bother with something they hate. I'm an otaku, I dont cuss and flame sites, I get all A's [proof Otaku's are not all stupid] I hate Dragon Ball Z, Spongbob, Invador Zim and alot of those things. People posting their opinion is fine with me. people taking up web space by making a web site to house their OPINION bothers me slightly. And not all people who watch anime are in grade school, or in school at all.
I hope everyone doesn't think that all otakus are flame happy when they see a post or whatnot. -_- Because not everyone is. And your not anti-anime if you don't like it- you're anti-anime if you have a serious problem with it. But have people watched all anime? Who knows, there could be an anime out there they might actually like! The horror...
And, people who complain that anime is porn- only some is. And it's because they (japanese) have different views on this than other people. Like, compare some anime to things like MTV and other tv shows. They use real people, while anime is in 2-D. Hm... I think that the 3-D is more convinsing.

I will agree that some Anime is bad, but some is good too. If you just watch some of the dubbed American versions, like Sailor Moon, DBZ, and Pokemon (which some people don't like at all) you are only taking that little part of Anime into account. There is more Anime out there then what is shown on Amercian TV, and some that are much better than others. I guess being an Otaku myself, and since I have watched so much Anime, you do notice that everyone has their own drawing style. I just want to say something to Mel. She claims that Otaku's are whiney losers with their Anti-Anti-Anime sites, yet then why are you whiney yourself about how bad Anime is? And for Suzie, I do go to school, and I am a good student who gets A's and B's. I think that Anime has a very unique drawing style, and I believe that the drawings have a lot of detail put into them (most of them anyway). I enjoy watching them in Japanese and picking out the words I know. I am taking Japanese in school and I enjoy learning a new language. Also another thing I like about Anime is that in Japan, children are exposed to more "adult" things on TV. Not all Anime is porn, some have a lot about love, wisdom, learning to live in a tough world, that sort of stuff. I am not trying to get anyone here to like Anime, and I think that you have a right to your own opinion, however, I feel quite offened when you say Anime sucks and that people who watch it are lame and stupid. It would be just like if I told you that you are stupid because you DON'T like Anime. If you want to make a site about how Anime is bad or how Anime is good, why not make it in a mature manner? Instead of saying how much it does/doesn't suck and how lame everyone is who does/doesn't watche it, why not just simply state your position in a mature way, why you think it is bad/good, and try not to flame those of different opinions than you. It would be a boring world if everyone liked the same thing. people, i know a lot of you like anime and a lot of you hate it. But the truth is that cartoons and anime have been inspired by one another. Take a look at Dexter's Lab it is was inspired by anime. Then, take a look at all the character designs in anime. Most of these anime character designs are like the classic Disney characters with big expressive eyes. What i am trying to say is that people who like anime should not bash classic american cartoons because in many ways it is better than most anime and it was insparation for some anime. Hell, I like anime such as Akira, Tenchi Muyo, Cowboy Bebop, Dragon ball Z, Gundam, kare Kano and My Neighbor totoro, but I also like Tom and Jerry, Popeye, Top cat, Courage the cowardly dog, Dexter's Lab, Looney toons, simpsons, and Samurai Jack. Ok, i was wrong in generalizing all Otakus and I wont deny you that, but MOST Otakus are still shit headed anime freaks...

I firmly believe that anime is a form of addiction and its not a meager pastime, why?

You people spend money on all sorts of anime paraphernalia and after awhile when it becomes recurring, you buy another 24 episodes and so the cycle goes.

The point is what is the benefit? nothing!, its not feasible to invest consistently on something that is merely entertainment. it will not help you whatsoever, physically and mentally. You only get a moment of gratification that only persists in the mind and by making anime fansites, joining cosplays and anything else on anime. you try to take anime to a crazy form of realism.

Well just an opinion on my standpoint, as much as i would want you Otakus to realize your futility, it would be also futile for me to try since nothing will change anyway.

By the way, im not a 5 year old kid, im a 20 year old, Philosophy Major student, eldest to a brood of seven, I'm studying very hard so my siblings can finish their education, and i encourage them always to study hard and avoid spending their money on things like anime.

And as much as i love my little sister (God bless little Tina), i just promised her that i would buy some blank CDs (priced 20 cents), borrow some fansubs and rip it off.

I would wish that Meia Gisborn was my wife, at least she has some sense in her... :P

Hmm...what would classify someone as being a fanatic (otaku)? I watch DBZ once each day (and have downloaded some of the origonal versions...which are a hell-of-alot better), just because I find the art to be more interesting than anything I hope to achieve myself (speaking of which, all those who like to rant on about how anime sucks, feel free to send me some of your fantastic art...) I think the reason that 3 cel style is used is because it takes so long to draw full-blown characters (not cutsie lil' bastards) esp those that are really detailed...Also, it seems to me that Americans usualy only make Warner Bros or MGM series, or Disney movies, never realistic styled series with more meaningful plots (cat catches stick of dynamite, cat goes boom...leaves alot to be desired after a while) but if they did, sure I'd watch them, but like now, just for entertainment. I respect those who love it or hate it, because I'm not a hard-core fan of anything other than real-life-sex and good food. Before I part, I must know... since when did someones life-style or personal interests become everyone elses buisness, really? It took me about 10 seconds to post this, by the time I am done I will have forgotten all about this great fued and gone on with my life, completely un-affected by anything said in here, I suggest the rest of you do the same.

I honestly don't understand some people. If you're an anime lover, that's dandy. If you're an anime hater, that's fine too. I really don't understand why some many people have such an incredible urge to insult others who don't share their opinion. It's happening on both sides, some say you're an infidel for not liking anime and others say you're a lame for liking it. Let people have their preferences, let people be themselves! Lameness is an the eye of the beholder.
For some strange reason, some people seemed to think there is only black and white, and no gray area. Yes, some anime people can be lames, and yes, some can be the coolest people you ever met. Also, yes, some people who don't like anime can be assholes, but also they can be nicest of people. The point is these are simply PREFERENCES, and these comments on how all anime lovers are lifeless lames and how all anti anime people are judgemental idiots are STEREOTYPES, and like all other stereotypes some people fit the category, and others do not. Futhermore, not all anime and manga are the same, just like how not all cartoons and comics are the same. As for the issue of free speech, people want to belong. So, just like an anime person would wish to go to a specific site and say: " Yeah, I feel that way, too!", an anti anime person would probally wish for the same sense of belonging. Do they not have the right to feel a since of belonging? Yes, they do have the right to do this. However, my only concern about anti sites is how far these do they take people. * sighs * Anyways, yes I like some anime, and yes I like some manga. However, I like cartoons, and also I like some comics. I'm not hoplessly devoted to one form of entertainment, I have a life, I get good grades, and I'm, not a fourteen year old ( not that it really matters ), I'm a young woman with broad intrests. All this anger is unecessary, though. It's not that serious, there are far more important issues in the world than rather or not your neighbor likes your form of entertainment or not.

I like anime. Anime indeed has sex scenes, or something like that, sometimes. But no1 said that anime is for little kids. Most of animes are for elderly, because of the violence and sex int it.

Anime is like a film, it can be like a thriller, action, love, or drama. Anime can be everything; anime means feelins.

Most of the animes are based on yap. legends and myths. And I hate Pockemon, I hate it when people call it anime. ITS INDEED anime, but I hate it, stupid shit. Plot is disgusting, characters are stupid, every episode is like the last one. But its made for little children, and I dont think that they know the difference between a really good anime, or a cartoon.

Wanna know what a really good Anime is? Jin Roh - Its the best anime I have ever seen, it has no sex scenes, but it has a fantastic plot. ( Every anime without a good plot contains sex, otherwise people wouldnt watch it...).

Watch Jin Roh, then talk about anime.

I am an anime fan, just your average 14-year-old guy who hangs out with his friends and watches anime, I also don't spend all of my money on anime. Up until about two weeks ago I've been the evil otaku, but after seeing Spirited Away, I changed, now I pity anti's. Poor people, so much hate . . .
Bottom line is, this movie can probably appeal to even anti's, please guys, just don't do stuff like posting messages that you hate anime on the net. Well thanks to all the anti's in advance. By the way Cyril and all the others, continue to ignore them and we'll win, they'll get tired.

P.S Up until I saw that movie, I was into really gory hardcore animes (still am) with soundtracks that could send you into anime-land, but this movie has made me relize something. You can't spend your life hating. Please everyone go and see this movie, I give it infinity x infinity x infinity (to the square root of infinity) out of 5 stars. It is absolutely the best anime film I have ever seen! After seeing it though, I was briefly a little depressed (spent about a days in my room drawing) because anime wasn't more mainstream in Australia, where I live. Sigh . . .

the way i see it is that everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but they should be stated as such. i'm an anime fan - i attend conventions, i post anime layouts, i download episodes, but i can honestly say that a lot of it sucks. you can't honestly form an opinion of something so diverse when you've seen so little. it would be like "i hate america because kentucky sucks." it doesn't make any sense that way. maybe you should stop being narrow-minded and accept things for what they are, not what they aren't. maybe they're not your "blue velvet" or your classical sense of entertainment, but it's something that many people enjoy. you should be glad of this, because while all these people with anime domains and anime-based blog layouts are in a clique. perhaps it makes you seem more unique? but that doesn't mean that you should crack on them, either.

Cyril, you're very level headed for such a young person. I honestly don't have a problem with people who enjoy anime. I just don't think I have anything in common with most people who are so into anime that they use it for blog or website themes. I didn't just wake up one morning and think "I don't like Japanimation or anime, so I'm going to boycott all sites that feature pictures of such things." I just really don't care about a 14 year old person's perspective on life. I've been there.

Anime is cheap and overrated.
Anime is very crappy. I'm sorry but Most Anime fans I've encounter are very immature. I hate anime because I don't like the content in most of it. The animators spend all that time drawing the characters and they hardly move. I've seen non-Disney films with higher animation quality than any Anime I've ever seen. Sure Akira and Battle Angel are an exceptionally high end but the result is always the same. The Characters are drawn with the utmost visual detail and I don't see any life-like movement from any of them. I hate "Dragonball Z" It is the worst piece of shit. Sorry I hate it. I'm not talking about the clean version. I'm talking about DBZ as a whole mmm kay. The show comes across as being writtten by a perverted 14 year old boy rather than from a mature Manga artist. Here's an example of why anime is cheap.... Have you ever seen an Anime character's face and body recoil smoothly from serene to fearful. Take an episode of SM Usagi sees Kaori at the front door of Hotaru's house. Her reaction is very forced. Notice that she isn't panting and her bottom lip isn't ever so slightly drooping to the ground. Take an American Cartoon like American Tail The reaction of the workers as the foreman tosses Fievel like a rag doll. their recoil is more believeable and their fear is felt by the viewer. Sailor Moon's recoil is like a two frame GIF89.

Anime is just entertainment not, god! I know the stereotypes are meanspirited but I can't blame people for percieving Anime fans as being low brows, cultists and tasteless perverts. I was a fan at one time. Except I was very low-key about it. Meaning only the Suncoast merchants knew what anime I liked and recognized me and family members. I'm an waning fan bordering on ex-fandom. You're acting worse than cult-members. I'm almost convinced ya'll might kidnapp someone and force 'em to watch Anime. I like DBZ the uncut version but I don't harrass people who like the edited version. Ya'll need to realize a very wise quote "To Each His Own". Pioneer is only producing edited versions to triple their profits. This is capitalism. The manga artists aren't making a stink about these changes they're living well(at least the sucessful ones). They're mature adults which is more than I can say for their fans. Even if they don't like the changes I'm sure they're handling it in a gracious fashion. It doesn't bother me I just pretend the crappy dubs don't exist.

I enjoy anime, simply because anything can happen at any time... (Murphy's Law apply here?) I enjoy the complex plots of some, and the styles of others.., a wide range of human emotion is entwined in a dense plot of some, and others are outright pointless random acts, usually quite hilarious. I can understand all of the meanings hidden in anime, as well as some old-time poetry, nursery rymes, and fables passed down... I think that I could be hooked, simply for the fact that a lot of anime (at least the ones that I rent) is not censored, actually has a plot, and is well-detailed... ("Vampire Hunter D-Bloodlust" is highly detailed, but I would not choose to let anyone watch it that is too young to understand the story, plot, and the difference from fantasy and reality...)

Disney cartoons aren't worse or better than Anime... Walt Disney had a style all his own... The reason that some people dislike Disney cartoons may be based on the plot, storyline, emotion, or singing... Disney cartoons are well-animated with smooth transitions from scene to scene and frame to frame... The average "Anime" movie only costs about $40k to produce, while the average animated "Disney" toon' will cost up to $100k and more to produce... I am willing to wager that if Disney made Anime, with the intensity, censorless plots, and storylines, combined with the creativeness and resourcefulness of their artists' talents, then quite a few more people would be interested in Disney cartoons...
I'm also willing to bet that if Disney produced "Adult-rated" cartoons, with blood, gore, sex, and twisted, dirty, or outright reality-based plots and storylines, well-balanced and well-made, than even more people would buy Disney cartoons... (on the same thought- what would the new "adult" addition of the theme park be like? Possibly an over-exaggerated, over-exploited mirror image of society?, or the biggest thing to hit the public since the "Wonder Bra"?!-- Instead of spinning teacups, they could have spinning D-cups! )

There is still hatred for some thing that really don't exist. Anime... thing that does not exist in our world, it's people imagination and dream to let people see fantasy which we could not achieve, thing that we could never expect and these people wanted to share with us. we could not reach them... we could not achieve them. thats what make people loves anime. do you remember the time when you draw a picture of something like that and show it to your father and mother and smile when they said thats the pretiest drawing that they ever see. do you remember the time when you are alone, starting to thing of imaginary war, ghosts and friends. things that don't really exist becomes a reality in our mind. people loves anime because they see drawings moving, imagination we could see just as we hope for our drawings to move. I watch cartoons like transformers, thundercats and scooby doo when i was just 3. don't understand those stories a lot but seeing those drawing moving with life makes me watch it. when i started entering school came the disney cartoon such as aladdin, the lion king, beauty and the beast. our family always watch the disney's animation in the cinema and after watching it bought the video cassetes. that was a very beatiful memories. when i entered high school, the japanese anime became my choice because they suit my need for different kind of cartoon, dragon ball, macross aka robotech and more then change to a more mature animation, Akira, ghost in the shell, vampire hunter d, gundam and so much more. I grow with them and i see my age with the change of animation i've been watching but still, each of them are still in me a memory of when i am a child. I'ts just an enjoyment throughout life, it doesn't hurt you (well maybe your heart and sometimes your brain when you hate it so much and bash your head so strong on the tv and wish it would disappear). reasons to hate anime, ok acceptable-animation sucks,lame, i don't like bug eye,character stereotype and so on, so on.... but to hate people who are enjoying it, that is not good friend... you are going the wrong way. you are hating human which logically is also you. i don't understand the need t wage war on the lovers and haters, its just senseless to fight on something which does ot really exist.

Anime does not suck. The only reason it may is because you are watching it on tv, one of the worst places to watch anime and this is why.
Anime that has been
syndicated to western television undergoes two types of censorship. The first is the censoring of mature material, and the second is the editing of story lines.
The main problem is that they miss the point of anime. In their minds, they see cartoons. And subsequently expect G-rated childrens programs. But most anime is created for college students and adults, and most of the anime that is for kids is created in a culture where kids are not limited to G-rated programs. I’m not talking about France were kids are free to watch nudity on television, but in Japan they make a point to express realism. If someone gets stabbed with a knife, the American cartoon would have it bounce out, teaching that hurting someone has no adverse effect, while the Japanese anime would show the blood, and death, as to prevent a conflict in the child’s mind between reality and TV. In fact, most TV related violence in the US is because kids didn’t understand the consequences of acting out what they saw. In anime, the consequences are clear and real, but when ported over to US television, are censored. In Sailormoon, violent scenes were removed. In Dragon Ball Z, all the blood was re-colored to look like sweat. Other adult themes are also completely removed. For instance, in Sailormoon there was both a gay and a lesbian couple, but in US TV, they made one of the guys a girl, and never showed the girl’s relationship. All this censorship should not be allowed, because it changes the themes and intent of the original. Censorship removes the point of anime.

Something no one would consider censorable material is the very story of the show. Why bother putting a show on TV if you’re going to cut have the story anyway? Well it happens. Robotech lost an entire season on the US. Sailormoon lost 7 out of its 72 episodes for its first season and a half. These edits leave entire gaps in the story, which make viewers confused in later episodes when an understanding of what happened in those episodes is expected. Anime isn’t episodic like American cartoons, it has a continuous story line, tightly linked, and any loss in that chain disrupts the entire series. Most syndicates are fairly indiscriminate in their editing too, they cut out scenes just to make room for commercials, or because they only want so may episodes per season. Also, American TV in dubbing, often changes entire conversations, because they reflect elements of the Japanese culture that others wouldn’t understand. But once again that misses the entire point of watching a foreign show. The idea is to learn about another culture, and experience foreign thoughts, not to change them to match domestic culture. Though I believe it might be the malicious intent of US TV to pretend that the borrowed Japanese anime are American inventions, as I’ve never once seen them directly advertise the fact that these shows come from Japan, as part of a completely unique genre called anime. How many of you knew that Speed Racer, Robotech, Voltron, Sailor Moon, DragonBall, DragonBall Z, and Pokemon were once anime before being domesticated?

All censorship of these types is the equivalent of plagiarism. It quotes the work of someone else, while altering it so that it fits our own culture and needs. Syndicates have to stop missing the point of anime. The only way anime should be presented is how it was created to be. It should be on prime time, because it is not designed for the G-rated children of America. Then the questionable material can be left in, most if which is not worse than anything in Simpsons®, Southpark®, or Beavis and Butthead®, though anime is infinitely more sophisticated and dynamic than the aforementioned shows. Then they should present it in its entirety, to preserve the story it was meant to be told.

The companies that show these censored anime are just trying to make a profit. These companies don't care about keeping it ''the way it was meant to be''. They just want to sell it to the mainstream and if it means making changes to an anime to sell it, they will do it. Most people who will become deticated fan of a censored anime will probably make their way to the uncensored version anyway. Don't be so elitist. Remember, anime is Just entertainment. hey, baikadjin. I liked the way Harmony Gold made Macross as a part of three different shows to make Robotech. The whole robotech series was great. The series shows that anime isn't that varied, though. don't take sailor moon too seriously that show was meant for 5 year old girls . Just my opinion. Peace Y'all

tell me what you want, this is mainly the point of those bugs eyes.you know those "super deformed" style of designing characters, like in "wish" by CLAMP, if there is someone in this world who remembers that comic. It's supposed to look cute. And I think it really does. Also quite dusky stories contain some drawings in SD-style. I don't know where you got your explanation for the bugs eyes from, maybe it's also a point of those unrealistic style.
But at least, my explanation seems much more logical to me and at least I'm not anti anime! I love the bugs eyes style and I love almost everything about it.
believe me, this world is made of money, if you don't get it, you might be kinda naive...

I'm an anime fan for like, 10 years now. I've visited too many countries on work trips and in all of them I saw anime. There is a wide range of anime, from anime to kids featuring cute litle plots to serious anime with depth more psychological violence rather than phisical, and then there is the pr0n hentai. From echi to hardcore, it's a cheap way of making pornography. But sincerely, I don't give a shit about hentai.

As I said earlier, I visited alot of countries. From Portugal to Russia, China, Japan, Brazil, Canada, US, among others; and I must say, American Dubbed Anime is the worst thing I've ever saw! Thank god for the Fan Subbers! It's like, the amercan official distributors take an anime and literaly butcher it! They select what they want, remake the openings and endings, twist the plot and reconfigurate the characters for KIDS! I mean, what the fuck is wrong with you??? Anime is not for kids, it's for everyone! No wonder there are anti-anime pages (most of them are either american or canadian), the anime you, americans, watch is not anime. It may look like anime, but it's all wrong, the american TV stations ruined the whole thing.

You speak of bug eyes? That's Kawaii Shoujo Animeshon (aka Cute Anime for Kids/Girls). Try watching Cybaster, Haibane Renmei, Lain and some other good animes. If you watch things like Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball (which is pretty good in it's original version but the american makes me puke) then you seriously need to watch some good stuff. Do that and then say something usefull.

You are free to like and hate whatever you wish, but before you hate something, please try to understand it or you'll be hating things without a full reason.

Its like when someone says "anime sucks" I can deal with it, fine even when they don't explain why it is, I leave it alone. But then these Neo Otaku come in and say "you just don't understand it". That's pretty much the only thing Anime fans can argue with, even when they don't know if the person did understand it and just didn't like it, because it was their opinion.

Point being, I am a BIASED anime fan, and I love anti anime post, it lets me know people THINK!

The only forgivable motive that would allow you to set up a collection of slander like this would be if the creator of the first manga/anime came into your house and burnt your posessions and family in front of your eyes. You evidently have no respect for other peoples cultures. By the way, half of the crude expletives directed at anime on this page can be taken as slander towards the creators. I just want to say that I have read most of this website and it is hard to believe all off this came from just one comment. I agree that there are people out there that like anime just because it is a trend. But there are some of us who hate stupid teen trends but we love anime. I have great respect for all forms of art, even though some are annoying. You just gotta live with it, and if you don't like anime, then don't watch. I know it is on a lot of channels but for now you'll just have to find another channel. Even though this site has made a lot of people mad, atleast it has made people think. Hey, afterall debate makes us all wizer...in this case it gives some of us a headache. Ha ha I love free speech.

ok, i really want to know how many "anti-animest" have truely watched lots of anime? maybe not "true" anime, but tons of different anime. i have watched over at lest 40 different shows, many of them good! i have had a huge love for japan & all it's works of art ever since i was 3. the first beginings of anime actualy began in the feudal era, when drawing,painting,& writing were nessisry(sorry about my spelling) to be educated. it's not a trend, but an intergarted part of life for many japanes. every artist draws differently, and of all the anime i have seen, hardly any of them have the same plot line, or look the same. true, there were some shows that i didn't like, but i don't bash them, in fact, i recamend them to people, becuase not everyone likes the same thing.some of you who call anime lame & shit, HAVE ONLY seen pokemon & that stuff, but if you really want to see things that are good so you can defend yourselves, try (if you live in the U.S. like me) watching adult swim mon.-thurs. things like witch hunter robin & inuyasha, shows that actually have a deep, interconnected plot, where the characters are more involed in their environments,lives, & the other characters,wheither dubed or not, will show you a hell of alot more then pokemon can. also try to have an open mind( i know, thinking to much might hurt you) because it isn't the culture you're probably use to. but i think those of you who can't get past your own limitations, will suffer the most in life, becuase you can't see something amazing that is right in front of your eyes, there to inrich & better your life, and will hurt you more because you can't open yourself to a diffrent & dirves thing. so if you want to bash me for my love of something new, go ahead, it's not like it hasn't aready happened. what i know is that the shows that i have watched, have more then once saved me from hurting myself becuase of shit in my life, which i'm very sure is true in many cases, not just with anime, but things like music & writing are the same. they're an outlet for feelings, so if you say it sucks,FUCK yourselves & go to HELL, i heard it's a very nice vacation spot for assholes like yourselves,'cause you don't know shit about this anyways!

anime is an art and momental achievement that has flourished for thousands of years in japan, where manga (that comic version of anime) is created to suit many, many, many varities and themes in our world......btw i can see your from the US...funny, isn't that some americans are so stuck up and close minded, hence your pathetic nature...so..

I have noticed that most people that don't like anime don't have a good reason. Most of your stereotypes are untrue and can't be proven, and just opinions from the beginning. It's almost funny at how you clump it into one catagory. Many of you don't chack your facts before you bash other peoples' opinions. An Otaku is really not a pleasant word - the term got a *lot* of air play in Japan during the time period when the guy who kidnapped school children and cut their heads off was being called an otaku because they found so much fan stuff in his apartment. Otaku means a person who is so obsessive about fandom (of whatever they might be a fan of, be it anime, stamps, girls or baseball) that they become pretty much crazy - so obsessed that they have no social skills or ability to focus on anything that _doesn't_ relate to their hobby interest. While the word is slowly becoming slightly less unpleasant in Japan in the decade or so since the axe murderer incident as that incident fades from the collective conscious into the collective subconscious, it is still not becoming a good word. It is only going from meaning psychotic axe murderer obsessive to meaning socially pathetic obsessive, which still isn't real great, and implies that the person is so into some useless little hobby they're doing that they're wasting their life (and might have been an axe murderer ten years ago).

Unfortunately, in the U.S. quite some time ago (over a decade, and a few more pick it up each year) some people picked up the term and misunderstood it and wore it as a badge of honor, possibly after seeing Otaku no Video, to mean I'm more of a fan than you are, which back when anime was hard to get really did mean something sort of positive since often the folks who were the biggest fans were also the ones working to try to bring more anime over to the U.S. for the community. And at that point, otaku wasn't quite such a horrible word in Japan because at that time it meant socially pathetic obsessive (who has never been an axe murderer, and we haven't thought of that yet). Someone even named a convention 'Otakon,' and I've heard as they were growing and the axe-murderer thing happened in addition to the original problems with the name, they had some difficulty convincing Japanese guests to visit until they developed their positive reputation in Japan (which luckily they did manage to do since someone gave them a chance and discovered that they're good and dependable folks).

There are now so many people in the U.S. who misunderstand the term, possibly fueled by the fact that Otakon has grown to over 15,000 people attending each year, that what was originally a wave of misguided application that was possibly correctable is now a major sea change in the meaning of the word for U.S. fans. Otaku is turning into something that just means 'J-fan' in the U.S. Language drift is normal, especially in terms borrowed from another language that don't mean something extremely explicit with no or few connotations (such as kimono or mosquito which have few places to drift to since the robe isn't gaining a third arm and the mosquito isn't turning into a Doberman). However, in this case the word does have negative connotations so it has long-term impact that Japanese fans and US fans talking to each other are *not* going to mean the same thing by Otaku, any more than Brits mean the same thing as Americans when they say "lift" or "flat." It definitely leads to some major misunderstanding potential - so I would say while we might have to give up and say "fine, use it to mean fan in English," those people who do also really need to understand what it actually means in Japanese before they try using it with a Japanese person - and that someone Japanese who refers to themselves as Otaku is likely to be a _lot_ further along the scale than someone American who does. An American who uses "flat" to mean "not raised" might have a little communication problem with a Brit who uses it to mean an apartment. An American who calls themselves an Otaku talking to Japanese, however, risks the Japanese person laughing nervously and finding someone else to talk to as soon as possible - or at least negatively tinting their impression of all your otherwise sensible thoughts henceforth. Never tell a potential Japanese employer that you're an otaku. Personally I'd also be insulted to be called an Otaku, since aside from running an anime con, I also have interests in reading, management theory, beadwork, history, language, computers, parties, art, puzzles, philosophy, animals, myth/symbol and allegorical meaning, writing poetry, midnight coffee with friends talking about non-anime topics, gardening and house work, great food, frequent dating, hanging out by a pool on warm summer days and walks on very pretty blue-sky autumn days with nice leaf colors - and I do NOT know every part played by the same guy who plays the beefy hamster on Hamtaro (actually, I don't even know who plays the beefy hamster on Hamtaro, which probably should be embarrassing since I probably ought to know at least the American V.A. for it - no Hamtaro guests for this con chair, bad bad con chair...). In short, I have a life, am capable of talking with people on assorted topics (though not who plays the beefy hamster on Hamtaro although I'm sure someone will write and let me know), and bathe frequently, and Otaku implies the opposite in all cases.

now that the craziness is coming to an end... i think, some animes are actually boring, but some are really good. i'm not fanatic about it, though.
i was, when i was younger. what fascinated me about these cartoons then, and in a way still does, is ... the bug-eyed asians?
many of these half-an-hour-cartoons are - though maybe lacking quality - more esthetic than those all-american disney movies.
well, that's my point of view.

and not all animes are boring.
many american cartoons, linke tiny toons and ... so on, they are all the same. so much shit in it, you can't compare it to animes.. exceptions are simpsons, south park... but they are not esthetic, are they?
